10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Knit a Sweater

Thinking of casting on your first (or next!) sweater?
Knitting a sweater is one of the most rewarding and cozy projects you can take on—but it’s also a commitment. Before you get swept up in the excitement, take a moment to ask yourself these 10 important questions. They’ll help you avoid common pitfalls and make sure your finished sweater is something you’ll actually want to wear.
1. Do I really know my size?
Sweater success starts with solid measurements. Grab a tape measure and jot down your upper chest, hip, and shoulder widths (and any additional measurements needed for the pattern). Pattern sizes vary, so choose your size based on finished garment measurements—not just what size you usually wear. (Check out our Ragtime Raglan sweater - available in 14 sizes!)
2. Did I check the gauge?
We know… swatching isn’t glamorous. But skipping it can lead to a sweater that’s too big, too small, or just doesn’t fit right. Take the time to knit a gauge swatch in the recommended stitch pattern. Future you will thank you.
3. Is this yarn right for the pattern?
Not all yarns behave the same way. Make sure your yarn is the same weight and has a similar fiber content to what the pattern recommends. Swapping out a wool for cotton, or a fingering for worsted, can dramatically change the final look and feel.
4. Do I have enough yarn?
Running out of yarn mid-sleeve is no fun—especially if the colorway is sold out. Check the pattern’s yardage requirements and compare them to your yarn. When in doubt, grab an extra skein (or two!).
5. Is this construction method right for me?
Sweaters can be knit top-down, bottom-up, in pieces, or all in one go. Some require seaming, others don’t. Choose a construction style that works with your skill level and your knitting preferences.
6. Have I read the whole pattern first?
We’ve all been there—starting strong, only to hit a tricky section later that we didn’t expect. Read the entire pattern before you start so you’re not surprised by techniques or shaping later on.
7. Am I okay with it taking a while?
Sweaters are a slow craft. And that’s part of their beauty! But they do take time. Make sure you're in the mood for a longer-term project—and don’t be afraid to take breaks or mix in quicker knits along the way.
8. Do I have the right tools?
Beyond needles, check if you’ll need stitch markers, a tapestry needle, a measuring tape, or even a row counter. Having everything ready before you start helps keep your momentum going.
9. Will I actually wear it?
It’s easy to fall for a trendy pattern, but ask yourself—does this fit your style? Will it work with your wardrobe? Be honest, and knit something you’ll reach for again and again.
10. Am I knitting this for joy—or obligation?
Knit because you want to, not because you feel like you should. Your sweater journey should be something you enjoy, not a source of stress.
Wrapping Up
Knit sweaters are a labor of love, and these questions help make sure your next one ends in success—not in a bin of WIPs.
